"VGCOA Webinar with ConfirmOK"

This presentation will explore how ConfirmOk and similar automated wellness check programs can support older adults who are aging in place, particularly those who live alone or may be socially isolated. We will discuss how daily check-in systems are being used by local agencies to provide an additional layer of support and help identify situations where someone may need assistance. The session will include examples of how these programs operate in practice, along with perspectives from law enforcement on the role these services can play in community care and prevention efforts. Sheriff Crawford from Petersburg, Virginia will also share observations from his experience working with these types of programs and her work with seniors in her county.

Drawing on two decades of research, Dr. Deborah Cohen, examines what makes parks effective settings for physical activity and community health. The body of work systematically measured park use by observing visitors and recording their age, gender, and activity levels, then linked those patterns to park amenities, programming, and spending to identify the factors that most strongly encourage active use. The talk reviews evidence on how new facilities, centers, renovations, special events, park type, neighborhood crime, poverty, and playground design each shape who comes to a park and how active they are once there. It closes with recent findings connecting park investment to measurable health outcomes — offering practical takeaways.
